Historically, this flower has been used both as a garden ornament and as a medicinal plant. In the past, the dried petals of Calendula flowers were used to add color to cheese and butter when dried; they were also used as a substitute for saffron. Medical uses included the treatment of measles and smallpox, as well as dressings for battlefield wounds. The calendula symbolizes sorrow and sympathy in addition to being the traditional flower of October birthdays.

Planting Instructions:
Direct sow in fall or early spring, planting 1/4 below the surface. To start English Marigold seeds indoors, plant 1/4 deep in individual pots or a flat; keep evenly moist and at a temperature of 60-65 degrees until germination, which should take place within 5-10 days. Transplant or thin seedlings. This plant can adapt to almost any soil, but prefers well-drained, poor or average soil. Since it prefers cool temperatures, it will appreciate filtered shade.
