THE ARTISTIC PROCESSHow does a 55-gallon oil drum become a decorative piece of art? First the oil residue must be burned off by lighting a fire in the drum with banana leaves or rags. Once cooled, makers cut the drum open and climb inside, using their entire bodies to flatten the steel into metal canvases. Then, talented artists draw free-form designs and work their magic with peen ball hammers. Finishing touches might include a simple sheen or colorful paint. Often, the artist will leave a signature mark, either tapped into the metal or with a special paint swirl. Each piece is an original artwork steeped in the traditions of Haitian culture.
