This secret compartment books box is made from four 18th century books that have been stacked on top of each other. The top three books are Latin-French dictionaries entitled Dictionaire de Trevoux, while the bottom one is Pandecta Ivstinia (the old Latin spelling of “Justinia”), which is a digest of Roman law compiled under the order of Justinian I in the 6th century. Produced in France during the 1700’s, the ruddy pages of the book have been glued together and pressed, allowing the center section to be hollowed out. The top two books form a lid that lifts to reveal a mottled black and brown compartment with three leather straps that stabilize the lid. All four books have ridged spines and chocolate colored leather. Our French leather books box is the perfect accessory for a library or gentleman’s office. Please note that for photography purposes, the lid is propped open by an old shelf support, although the lid can stay open without the piece of wood (see detail photos). The support can be included with the books box upon request. CONDITION: Good antique condition, with wear commensurate to age and use, including light chapping of leather. Slight discoloration in some areas, coupled with some age separations to the exterior. Minor buildup, rubs, and losses to the interior.
